I live in Chicago, however the first Meijer I went to was in Indiana, it is a supercenter and I loved it . I really dont like the market places or mini supercenters they dont offer as much. In Indiana I found my granddaughter beautiful summer clothes , much more of a variety of things, and better bargains. The supercenters are definitely the way to go. I love Meijers , just wish I didnt have to travel so far to get everything I want in one store.

In answer to the question posed in this article, Yes, it is. In my mind Wal-Mart has three problems to overcome in order to have half a chance of bringing back previously loyal customers. #1 - have more check-outs open during the busy parts of the day. Nothing like stopping to get a few things and then have to stand in line at the check-out for at least as long as it took to do your shopping. Why are there 30 registers and most of the time only 8-10 are open? These days we don't like having to wait for anything. #2 - Let's say I stop to pick up a few things. I have to walk clear to the back of the store for cat food and then to the other side of the store for a quart of oil, then back to the grocery aisle for ice cream. It takes extra time to navigate around those BIG stores. The Wal-Mart store of old was a better size to be able to shop quickly. #3 - Give the customer some options in the product lines. Some time ago I went to Wal-Mart to buy some kitchen garbage bags. on the shelf was 1 option, a 100ct package for around $5. I don't usually buy 100 and found another retailer that carried a 50ct package. I don't know if Wal-Mart carries them in a 50ct package because I don't go to Wal-Mart for them anymore. I'm just saying.......

Comment on Walmart and Target Retail Stores Give Amazon a Brick & Mortar Footprint by Mark Elson, general manager, Mobi Technologies

From all the data I have seen that shows reasons why shoppers decide to purchase in bricks-n-mortar stores over shopping online, among the highest are 1) value-added customer service provided by in-store personnel; 2) immediate inventory on hand and; 3) the ability to physically inspect or even get a demonstration of product. The lowest is price. Once retail stores abandon the very things that distinguish them, they lose. Having a well-trained, knowledgeable and happy staff whose function is to serve in-store shoppers is an expense that many retailers would rather do without, jettisoning it as a thing from the past. These retailers deserve to be throttled in the market place.

Kevin, have you ever been to the US? Clearly not or you would know that wal mart is not the only place Americans can shop. There are thousand of choices in any city. I know many people who won't shop at wal mart at all because they want more personal service. I do because wal mart offers a wide selection of goods at good prices and their quality is good because of their high volume. Nothing sits around. Many mom and pop stores are very happy to locate in the same shopping center as a wal mart so that they can ride their coattails to success. People who want service and advice go to a smaller establishment. Wal mart cannot offer that. It is strictly no frills. There is room for both in any economy. Wal mart is genius at retail and they treat and pay their employees well. That is why they never have trouble hiring. The Philippines would do well to get them.

Obviously the author has not looked at the financial results for the last 12 years but only the stock price. There were about 3 to 4 years recently of less than Walmart like comp store sales. Now, the stores once again have the best assortment and overall prices in the marketplace which has brought traffic and sales back. It would be foolish to bet against Walmart if one has a long term strategy.

As a customer, what frustrates me about the self-check out lines is Walmart has reduced the amount of check out lanes with human cashiers, so we are forced to self-check or wait in longer lines. Watching a bored "self-checkout" babysitter stand behind a podium while we (the customer) do their work is irritating. If you want me to self-check, then give me a 10% discount on my purchase for doing so. I don't use the self-check lines anymore, and have started shopping elsewhere when I can. It just takes too long to get out of Walmart these days.

We shop locally, not nationwide, the exception being internet shopping. If in fact you live in Sarasota Fl. and see a ad for a item in LA, Walmart and all the other we match it stores should let you just buy the product in LA, which of course is not practical. The real issue in my mind is why is Walmart, the so called price leader now have to resort to a marketing tactic that in years past it forced on the competitors. The reason of course is that they have lost their low price stature. Bob

THE AD THAT IS ADVERTISED ON TV IS WE WILL MATCH IT! THEN WHY IS THERE STIPULATIONS ABOUT LOCAL COMPETITORS ONLY. IS IT NOT TRUE THAT WALMART IS ABOUT THE LOWEST PRICES ON THE MARKET? THE MARKET IS NATION WIDE!
