Drapers reports that George at Asda’s executive managing director, Andrew Moore,will be stepping into the role of chief merchandising officer for both Asda and George at Asda. The George brand is regarded by analysts as one of the reasons for Asda’s recent sales success.
By nicdafis Reuters reports that Asda’s sales are up 2.2 percent in the first quarter of 2012. Executives for the Walmart-owned UK chain state that Asda’s commitment to providing excellent value is responsible for its consistent, encouraging growth.
The Baltimore Sun reports that Walmart intends to work on improving its existing efforts in Africa and to hold off on moving into new markets. The article also notes that the company plans to focus on expanding its grocery offerings in region.
The Telegraph reports that Asda may add holograms to its sales staff. Asda has already tried virtual assistants in its shops to the satisfaction of its customers; Now the chain is considering expanding the program. Hologram sales assistants advise customers of sales and promotions and can also be programed make product suggestions.
The Grocer reports that Asda’s entertainment product (DVDs, music and games) market share now exceeds that of Tesco. Reports show that Tesco’s share is now 9% while Asda leads at 9.3%.

David Welch reports that Walmart’s Mexican bribery scandal may affect it’s global expansion plans: “Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s (WMT) (WMT) global operations were designed to help it become less reliant on its mature U.S. business. Now Wal-Mart is grappling with possible bribery in Mexico, its second-largest foreign market, potentially putting the global strategy in peril.”
Asda has begun trials of “contactless payments” in various stores across the UK, according to several media reports. Contactless payments allow consumers to wave or tap a card containing a RFID chip against a terminal, quickly authorizing payment.
